Interview with Matthias Baetens

Data Science Researcher at Arabesque

Please, tell a bit about the work you do. How did you first get involved into this work?

I am working as a data scientist / engineer on an ESG Quant team. I got hired for my cloud and data knowledge that I built previously on Google Cloud.

What is the most challenging part of your work, and what is the most rewarding one?

Quantifying ‘fuzzy’ things like ESG is quite hard because there is no ‘truth’ value or reference. The most rewarding is the thought that the work I do will end up in companies behaving better and making this planet a better place to live.

Do you have any advice for someone interested in pursuing the same career?

Be curious and don’t give up. Most things you see out there are not magic, and if you dig deeper trying to understand how it works, you’ll see it is not that difficult.

Can you give us a sneak peek into your GDG DevFest Romania talk? Why did you choose this subject?

I will be talking about data processing with Apache Beam and how it transformed the analytics at a large media company in the UK. I have been involved with Beam since the start of my working career and started a meet-up on the subject in London which I am still running to date.

In your opinion, what are the benefits of attending events like GDG DevFest Romania?

You will meet loads of interesting people and learn a lot – and hopefully be inspired to try some of the things yourself!
